Goodbye Malaysia

Day 59

Our mission today was to find the Sunday Market. It happens on the last Sunday of every month. We had a lot of trouble finding someone who knew about it. After Starbucks we decided to give up on it for a little while and try to go on a tour of the Blue Mansion. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived there we were too late for the 1100 tour. We would have to wait until the 1500 one.

There were some artists sitting acts the street sketching the beautiful building. I wanted to go see what their drawings looked like. We admired them for a few minutes and talked to the artists. They said they knew all about the Sunday Market. It was just around the corner!

So our luck had changed and we walked on over. The market reminded me of a small-scale Mayfest. It only took up one wide, but short street. There was all different kinds of art and handicrafts for sale. After walking around for about an hour we had seen everything. We were hungry too.

We headed over to SOHO for lunch and the free internet. It was China and Japan research time. I was really hoping to be able to go to a concert somewhere over here, so I looked that up. It took a lot of searching because they don't have a ticketmaster equivalent. Baseball season is over; sumo wrestling is only in certain months (and really expensive); and I didn't know any bands that were playing or how to buy tickets.

Kelsey and Kelly played a good game of pool with some guys from the Australian Navy while I spent some quality time on Facebook. The internet is such a great tool. It def makes life better. After this trip I realize how much time I spend on the internet every day. But I'm not going to change because it's not a bad addiction.

We got so caught up in Facebook and pool at SOHO that we missed our tour of the Blue Mansion. We had to get back to the boat! Goodbye Malaysia.

For My Mother

My mom is not as knowledgeable in things computer- or internet-related. So this post is for her and people like her. It is an explanation of hyperlinks. Dear mom, As you read my blog posts, you may notice some words are a different color, as if they are being highlighted. Well, these words are the equivalent of a footnote in books. You can click on them for a further explanation or more information. A hyperlink is the term used for these special words. I hope that helps. Love you.

Day 68 I just had a great conversation with Josie . We sat together at lunch and talked about Vietnam . This country has really had an effect on me. Josie and I wondered about the Vietnam war and the things that happened—things that I had never he ard about. We never learned about the Vietnam War in school. Josie mused that it must be because our teachers and parents lived through the war. It was so recent in their minds, that they just took it for granted that we knew about it. So we were never taught. As a result, my generation doesn't know anything unless they sought it out themselves.  I hate to say that I've always been sensitive to the atrocities and unfairness in the world. That sounds narcissistic. I was aware of them, though, and didn't like them. However, I was never aware of all of it. I guess that would be impossible. This trip has opened my eyes in ways I never expected it to. I don't understand why I get so much, why my life is so easy, when ...

Barcelona

Flew to Barcelona yesterday morning. Just in time for Día de Sant Jordi (St. Geroge Day), which is the Spanish version of Valentine's Day. There are roses being sold EVERYWHERE, in any color you could ask for, even rainbow. It is also el día de los libros (book day), so there are tents set up in all the plazas selling books. Several of them also have authors signing throughout the day. I had a book called Fantasias animadas by Berta Marse inscribed. I came to Barcelona this weekend to visit my friend from high school spanish class, John Neff. So I was calling him throughout the morning trying to meet up. However, he has a spanish girlfriend, so he was spending the day with her. I decided to get myself away from all the cuddly couples and roses on the street by having some retail therapy. I spent a lot of time in Desigual because I really want to get something from there, but I couldn't find anything I really liked enough to pay those prices. Their swim suits are adorable...
